Martin Bonfy, 1956-2019

Funeral services for Martin “Marty” Bonfy will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. The Rev. Matthew Lehman will officiate. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service.

Marty passed away of natural causes Tuesday, March 5, 2019, at his home in Urbandale, Iowa. He was 62 when he passed away.

Martin Lee Bonfy was born Aug. 30, 1956, in Stuttgart, Germany, to Buddy Lee and Phyllis Ann (Bay) Bonfy. Marty’s early years were spent in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; St. Joseph, Missouri; Albert Lea; and Urbandale, where he graduated high school. Marty excelled as a hockey goalie, playing Bantam league in Albert Lea and high school hockey in Urbandale.

Following his schooling, Marty went to basic training in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army following his service to his country.

Marty was united in marriage to Lisa Young in 1975, and together they had a daughter, Faith. Marty worked for Wilson Sinclair in Des Moines, Iowa.

Marty enjoyed many things in life. Fishing and music were his favorite. Marty also liked taking family trips back to Oklahoma to visit extended relatives. Marty was soft-spoken, kind, funny and giving.

Marty would always think of helping others before thinking about helping himself.

He is preceded in death by grandparents Quay (Marjorie) Bonfy and Gene (Evelyn) Bay; cousin, Eric; uncles Marvin, Wayne and Floyd; and aunts Paula and Wilma.

Marty is survived by his daughter, Faith Jenkins; grandchildren Gage and Aurora Jenkins; parents Buddy and Phyllis Bonfy of Albert Lea; siblings Gloria (Bonfy) Waugh of Perry, Oklahoma, and Randy Bonfy of Albert Lea; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended relatives and friends.
