ST. PAUL — After qualifying at last weekend’s section tournament, the NRHEG duo of Tyler Jacobson and Quinten Arndt started their Minnesota state wrestling tournament runs Friday afternoon.
Despite neither wrestler winning their opening-round matches, one earned a wrestleback in the consolation bracket. However, a loss in the consolation ended both Panthers’ seasons on the first day.
Jacobson, a senior, went up against a powerhouse in his first-round match at 170 pounds. Jacobson was unable to keep up with the quickness and power of No. 5 Jace Paplow of Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove, falling in a 5-0 decision.
Due to Paplow losing his quarterfinal match, Jacobson failed to receive a wrestleback, ending his senior campaign with a record of 25-13.
Arndt, a senior, also had a tough matchup in his opening round at 285 pounds. Going up against No. 2-ranked Tanner Berghuis, Arndt put up a good fight, but ultimately came up short, losing a 6-2 decision.
Unlike Jacobson, Arndt was awarded a wrestleback, but was unable to make the most of the opportunity, falling in his match 3-0. After a first-period stalemate ending in 0-0, Arndt started on the top in the second. Down 1-0 after a quick escape by his opponent, Arndt was hit with a last second takedown in the second and was unable to escape in the third. The senior’s season comes to an end with a record of 29-11.
