Editorial: There are many opportunities to volunteer

This month is National Volunteer Month, an opportunity to recognize those in the community who are making a difference as volunteers at churches, schools, youth leagues, nonprofits and many other places throughout the community.

The month was designated as part of President George H.W. Bush’s 1,000 Points of Light campaign in 1991. Through the campaign, he invited the nation to get involved through public service. Later, the effort led to the creation of the Points of Light Foundation, which celebrates ordinary people making an extraordinary difference in their communities through volunteer service.

In Albert Lea, there are numerous opportunities to serve, and many organizations rely on a strong base of volunteers to fulfill their missions. You can volunteer as little or as much as you would like — whether that’s on a daily, weekly, monthly or even annual basis. These groups will be grateful for any service you might be able to provide.

You’ll find that as you volunteer your time, it not only helps others, but will help you, too.

Volunteering gives a sense of purpose, can lower stress and can improve your mood. You’ll make new friends and sometimes even find a new passion that could lead to a career opportunity. Allowing your children or grandchildren to see you volunteering — or even get involved themselves — teaches them the importance of giving back to the community.

If you’re not currently volunteering, we encourage you to find an organization you’d like to support and jump on board. If you don’t have a specific organization in mind, volunteer opportunities can also be found through the United Way of Freeborn County and the Blue Zones Project.
