To the return of spring weather.
After a bout of winter weather last week, spring temperatures are finally moving back into the area. Temperatures were expected to reach 60 degrees Friday, pass 70 degrees on Saturday and even hit 75 degrees on Sunday.
Though scattered showers are on the horizon for Monday and Tuesday, it looks like a great weekend of weather is in store.
To a new case of Legionnaires’ disease at St. John’s Lutheran Community on Fountain Lake.
We and the rest of the community were saddened to hear news this week that a new case of Legionnaires’ disease was discovered in a resident at St. John’s Lutheran Community on Fountain Lake.
St. John’s had five cases of Legionnaires’ last summer, and the facility had not seen any new cases since August.
We applaud St. John’s for its quick response in beginning to test the water mains at the facility, and we hope answers can be found about what has led to this case.
We also hope a solution can be discovered so this will not happen again.
To the Glenville-Emmons School mock crash.
Thank you to the organizers of the mock crash at Glenville-Emmons High School on Thursday for creating an event to remind students of what can happen when people drive impaired, distracted or unbelted.
The scenario incorporated National Honor Society students from the school, as well as responders from Glenville Fire Department, Mayo Clinic Ambulance, Mayo One, Minnesota State Patrol, Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office and Bonnerup Funeral Services.
We hope students took the message to heart and remember that these types of events can happen to anyone.
We urge all area students to practice responsible behavior during prom season and always.
To the upcoming job fair on Wednesday.
Kudos to the businesses who have signed up to participate in the Albert Lea Job & Career Fair Wednesday at Northbridge Mall. The fair allows job seekers to find out about many employment opportunities all in one place.
We encourage people to attend. It will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. and will feature representatives from 35 businesses, covering a variety of both part-time and full-time jobs, including entry-level, professional, health care and manufacturing positions.
To rising costs of medications for people with diabetes.
Medications for people with diabetes are through the roof right now, and the problem is impacting many in our community, both young and old.
Talking with Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea endocrinologist Sumit Bhagra this week, he said some patients with diabetes are paying close to $1,000 a month out of pocket for medications. This is the same for patients of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
We urge action to be taken to reduce these costs.
