Project: Adult Basic Education

Report: The mission of the Albert Lea Adult Learning Center is to provide adults with educational opportunities to acquire and improve their literacy skills necessary to become self-sufficient and to participate effectively as productive workers, family members and citizens.

Classes offered include general educational development diploma, English as a second language instruction for learners whose native language is not English, basic skill building, such as work-related math, functional literacy, reading or writing assistance, U.S. citizenship and work readiness and contextualized career skills.

Adult Basic Education initiatives and priority program areas include:

Adult career pathways to prepare adults for postsecondary education, training, employment and workforce education.

Pre-employment programs to provide basic skills necessary for work or post-secondary.

Digital literacy building adults’ technology skills.

The Adult Learning Center is at Brookside Education Center and serves over 250 students a year. Students range in age from 17 to 76 and represent 15 countries and 11 languages.

The grant will be used to fund additional life and work skills classes, such as sewing and first aid/CPR training.
