The city of Albert Lea has contracted with Mosquito Control of Iowa for mosquito control this season.
According to a press release, the company encourages any residents who may have questions to call 712-848-3295 or visit www.mosquitocontrolofiowa.com.
The company is scheduled to begin service Tuesday, beginning at dusk. The application will be by ground. For the following 10 weeks, application will be on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings, with rain dates the following day when possible.
The product being used is Evoluer 4-4. It is a Permethrin-based product which is safe yet effective against mosquitoes and gnats, the release states, and the product has quick knockdown, low odor and is non-corrosive. The product is registered by the EPA and Minnesota Department of Agriculture.
In addition to the adult mosquito control program, there are several things homeowners can do to reduce the local mosquito population. Recommendations include:
Eliminate trash, tires and containers that may hold water, creating a breeding site for mosquitoes.
Maintain rain gutters and downspouts. Make sure no water remains in after it rains.
Empty and clean bird baths weekly.
Store pails barrels, tubs, boats, wheelbarrows, etc. upside down.
Keep shrubs, lawns and weeds trimmed to eliminate harborage areas.
Encourage neighbors to properly maintain their properties.
