Editorial: Stay safe in extreme heat

With temperatures and humidity high this week, it’s important to remember the effects that extreme heat can have on both people and animals.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures are expected to drop to 84 degrees for the high on Tuesday before rising again to the upper 80s and lower 90s for the end of the week.

The Weather Service offers the following advice to help people beat the heat:

• Stay in air-conditioning if possible.

• Drink plenty of water.

• Avoid strenuous activity.

• Stay in shade when possible outdoors.

• Wear loose, light-colored clothing.

• Provide shade and water for pets.

• Check on neighbors.

• Never leave pets or children in vehicles for any length of time.

People are encouraged to call 911 for any of the following symptoms: hot, dry skin; confusion; loss of consciousness; chest pains or shortness of breath. Remember heat-induced illnesses can occur, and some can even result in death.
