Gladys L. Hanson, 98, passed away Friday, Aug. 16, 2019, at Lake Mills Care Center.

A funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. The Rev. Joel Guttormson will officiate. Burial will take place in Salem Memorial Cemetery in rural Lake Mills. Visitation for Gladys is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 E. Main St. in Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church Monday. Gladys Lorraine (Johnson) Hanson was born April 27, 1921, on a farm east of Lake Mills to parents Gustof and Alma (Sanvik) Johnson. She attended Scarville schools and graduated in 1939. Following graduation Gladys worked as a nanny in Lake Mills.

In 1942 she was married to Burton Kobbervig and traveled with him while he trained in the U.S. Army Air Corp. Burton died in Lake Mills in 1952 from health complications.

Gladys worked in the kitchen at Lake Mills Community School from 1944 to 1954.

On June 26, 1954, Gladys and Harvey Hanson of Northwood were united in marriage. They made their home in Albert Lea, where Harvey worked for Wilson & Co. and Gladys worked at Halverson Elementary School as a cook. They were members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Albert Lea for 24 years. In 1978, they retired and moved to Lake Mills.

Gladys was active at Salem Lutheran Church, where she was on altar guild, a member of WELCA, enjoyed her church circle and helped with quilting. She also delivered meals on wheels, volunteered at Lake Mills Care Center and was a 74-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

The couple made trips to Leech Lake in Minnesota and to Las Vegas, where she and Harvey enjoyed time spent with Gladys’ sister, Alvira, and Carl Kloster. Gladys loved her family gatherings with her siblings and other relatives, most often taking place on her parents’ farm.

Gladys passed away at Lake Mills Care Center, where she had lived for the last two years and eight months.

She is survived by her son, Danny (Mary) Hanson, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; granddaughter, Kristina Krieger, of Eagan; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, Victor Sundsvold; husbands Burton and Harvey; brothers Palmer Johnson, Kenneth Johnson, Russel Sundsvold and Leslie Sundsvold; sister, Alvira Kloster; daughter-in-law, Devra Hanson; and three nephews.

Gladys will be remembered for her kindness with a smile, willingness to help others, her hospitality, wonderful cooking skills and above all, her love of faith and family.
