Three Minnesota State Patrol troopers were taken to Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea for precautionary treatment Monday evening after being exposed to a chemical during a commercial vehicle stop.
The Minnesota State Patrol pulled over the vehicle at 6:45 p.m. at 2501 Crossroads Boulevard in Albert Lea.
Albert Lea firefighters, Albert Lea police and Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office deputies secured the scene, and the state chemical assessment team out of the Rochester Fire Department responded to assist with identifying the chemical.
The chemical was identified as styrene, a flammable liquid used to make insulation, polystyrene plastics, fiberglass, rubber and latex.
After investigation by the assessment team and Albert Lea firefighters, the vehicle tank was found to be safe.
Other agencies involved were the State Fire Marshal’s Office, Mayo Clinic Ambulance and the Department of Transportation hazmat specialist.
