ALHS music department to host first concert of the year

The Albert Lea High School vocal and orchestra students and staff welcome the public to attend the first concert of the year, which will take place Monday at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea.

There will be two separate concerts to accommodate the traditionally large crowd, according to a press release.

The first concert will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will feature the Tiger orchestra, Tiger choir and Celebr8 Choir. The Tiger orchestra will perform pieces from Hungary, Ireland, and a “Zombie Tango.”

The choirs will be performing pieces from Africa, including “Sisi Kushangilia” and “Imbakwa,” folk songs from early American history and pop and gospel pieces.

The second concert will begin at 8 p.m. and the symphony orchestra, varsity choir and concert choirs will perform.

The symphony orchestra will perform the first and second movement of “Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 Scherzo” in g minor” and a new piece titled, “Phantom Waltz,” which features a duet between the cello and the viola. 

The varsity choir will sing several folk songs, including “The Water is Wide,” “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child” and “One Voice,” made popular by the Wailin’ Jennys.

Concert choir will sing a variety of pieces including “Omnia Sol,” “Abendlied” by Rheinberger, a contemporary piece entitled “Identities” and a blue grass/gospel rendition of “Will the Circle Be Unbroken?”

The orchestra and choir will combine to perform “The Ground” by Ola Gjeilo.

The choirs areconducted by Mary Bissen and Diane Heaney and the orchestras by Rebekah Crissinger.
