5 things to do this weekend

Published 8:12 pm Wednesday, November 20, 2019

1. Ricky Nelson Remembered

Ricky Nelson — actor, musician and original teen heartthrob — will be celebrated Friday in a musical tribute show at Marion Ross Performing Arts Center downtown. The show follows the story of his musical career from the early days of “The Ozzie and Harriet Show” to the later years with comeback hit “Garden Party.” Music will be performed by regional bands the DC Drifters and DJ & The Runaways, with Terry Kline performing as Nelson on vocals. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15.

2. Snowy season painting parties

Relax into the weekend with some group art therapy and get your holiday decorating off to a fun and creative start. At 7 p.m. Friday, you can try your hand at painting a snowglobe — a picture of one, that is — on canvas. And at 5 p.m. Saturday, it’s time to break out the burlap and paint your own table runner or placemats. Both paint parties are hosted by Sunflower and Countryside creations and will take place at Harold’s Bar. All supplies included for a cost of either $25 or $30.

3. An afternoon at the opera

Experience the avant-garde genius of composer Philip Glass from the comfort of your hometown theater. The Metropolitan Opera Live will broadcast its matinee performance of “Akhnaten” to big screens around the world, including Marion Ross Performing Arts Center in downtown Albert Lea. The opera, which debuted in 1984, tells the story of the Egyptian pharaoh who tried to turn Egypt into a monotheistic culture during his short time on the throne. Tickets are $20 for adults. Student tickets are $12, but will be admitted at no charge with ID. The opera will start at 11:55 a.m. and end around 3:30 p.m.

4. Kindness Rocks painting party

Indulge your creative side, spread a little joy and stock up on warm fuzzies at the Kindness Rocks painting party from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Northbridge Mall food court. The Kindness Rocks movement is a simple and fun way to love your neighbor. First, paint an uplifting word or  message of kindness on a rock or two. Then place in secret (public) locations around town, and enjoy knowing that someday, someone will discover your rock, and get a boost of delight in their day. All supplies will be provided for this event, which is sponsored by the United Way.

5. Albert Lea Cantori sings in the season

Albert Lea Cantori will present its fall 2019 concert,“This Little Babe,” Sunday at United Methodist Church, 702 U.S. Highway 69. The ensemble will perform “A Ceremony of Carols” by Benjamin Britten, a Christmas choral piece featuring a harp solo. Directed by Eileen Nelson Ness, the concert will start at 3 p.m.
