The Albert Lea girls’ hockey team hit the road to play Minnehaha Academy Saturday afternoon in search of its second win of the season.

The Tigers climbed out to a three-goal lead midway through the second period and never looked back, beating the Redhawks 3-2.

Junior Josie Venem got the scoring started in the first period for the Tigers on a power play goal with less than one minute remaining in the period. Senior Katelyn Steven assisted on the goal.

With a 1-0 lead to start the second, Albert Lea came out and scored its second goal less than one minute into the period. This time it was Steven who put the puck in the net with an assist from junior Alli Dulitz.

The Tigers took a commanding lead six minutes later when Venem recorded her second goal of the game. This time the goal was assisted by Dulitz and sophomore Esther Yoon.

The Redhawks started to make a comeback late in the second period by scoring a short-handed, unassisted goal to make it a 3-1 game heading into the final period.

Minnehaha Academy closed the gap to one with just over seven minutes into the third period. However, with 10 minutes remaining, the Albert Lea defense held on to come away with the victory.

The Tigers improve to 2-2 on the season and will play again Tuesday night when they host the Raiders of Northfield. After Tuesday’s game, the Tigers will embark on a seven-game road trip and will not play at home again until Dec. 17.
