Gopher basketball falls in season opener 50 yrs. ago

50 years: 1969
• The Albert Lea gymnastics team opened its season with a 53.5-51.5 win over Mankato. Captain Earl Neist was first in the horizontal bars and still rings, second in tumbling and trampoline and third in free exercise that led him to capture the all-around title.
• The Minnesota Gophers men’s basketball team opened their season with a 84-75 loss to Notre Dame in front of 6,580 fans at Williams Arena. Eric Hill led the Gophers with 22 points, with Ollie Shannon adding 18.
• Former Albert Lea football player Donn Drommerhausen, who was playing for Concordia College of Moorhead, was set to play in the NAIA Championship Bowl football game in Kingsville, Texas. The game featured Concordia playing Texas A&I. In his first year with the Cobbers, Drommerhausen intercepted seven passes including a key interception against Hamline.
25 years: 1994
• The Albert Lea boys’ basketball team opened its season on the road and defeated United South Central, 55-47. Scott Erickson led the Tigers in scoring with all 14 of his points coming in the second half. The Tigers were coached by Paul Woodside.
• The Glenville-Emmons wrestling team took sixth place of eight teams in the Mankato Loyola tournament. Capturing first place in the meet were Darrin Madson at 112 pounds and Jessie Reyerson at 103 pounds.
• The Domino’s Junior Gold hockey team opened its season at City Arena with a 4-3 win over Fairmont. Greg Madrigal, Jeremy Kallberg, Tony Ramirez and Jason Anfinson scored in the win.
• The Albert Lea girls’ B-squad basketball team went to 2-0 on the season with a 39-13 win over Winona. Darcie Gayken had 12 points with Kara Ladlie eight to lead the Tigers.
10 years: 2009
• Glenville-Emmons junior Kalli VanRyswyk scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the Wolverines defeated Lyle-Pacelli 42-29 in Southeast Conference girls basketball play.
• Tyler Brackey scored the game-winning goal in overtime as the Albert Lea boys’ hockey team defeated Waseca, 4-3. Mason Tuohy, Troy Seberson and Casey Marka added goals for the Tigers.
• Abby Arends scored 27 points and grabbed seven rebounds, but it was not enough as the Albert Lea girls’ basketball team was defeated by Waseca 59-57. Morgan Stadheim added 13 points and 14 rebounds.
This year
• Former Albert Lea Tigers football coach and athletic director Clay Anderson is in his fifth year at Pipestone Area Schools where he holds the same positions he held in Albert Lea. He led the Arrows to a 7-4 record in 2019, 8-3 in 2018 and 12-2 in 2017, which included a trip to the Prep Bowl finals, where they lost to Caledonia.
