Letter: Effort had many volunteer hours

Published 10:11 pm Tuesday, December 3, 2019

This is the most blessed Thanksgiving that I can remember as Albert Lea celebrates the arrival of MercyOne. Thank you all who have supported our journey to secure and restore the health care we desperately need.

I reflect on the blessings we received when the help we needed was available along the way.

There were no wages for anyone, we all volunteered countless hours of meetings, letter writing, calling, lobbying, rallies, fundraising and a dinner and silent auction was held to cover expenses such as, mailings, buses to Rochester and state Capitol. These funds also paid for the legal study, proving that having our own clinic/hospital in Albert Lea would be economically viable. Our brilliant leaders of SOH came to us providing the skills needed to go about this endeavor in an orderly and correct way. People have  reached out to help us. We have a lady that has experienced like circumstances in her city and has offered her knowledge and help in every way possible, including driving (60-plus miles) here to attend meetings. Bless all of you for volunteering hours of your life for our cause.

Some people have voiced their concern about choosing MercyOne over Mayo. You do not need to “choose,” but now we have a choice and that will make all of your health care needs more affordable. You are welcome to go to both if that is what you want.

Our 31st President Herbert Hoover stated, “Competition is not only the basis of protection to the consumer, but is the incentive to progress.”

Mercy is so excited to be joining our community and looking forward to expanding as the needs increase. More patients, more doctors and specialists.

If you have questions or concerns, please call 1-507-379-6909 or email AlbertLeaHealthcareCoalition@gmail.com.

We continue to be committed in restoring our ancestors’ legacy of having our own full  service healthcare in Albert Lea.

You are always encouraged to come to our Sunday meetings at 6 p.m. at the American Legion (to be announced on the SOH site and on KATE Radio). We will answer your questions or you can just sit and listen. We welcome suggestions and opinions.
