Tigers compete at Rumble on the Red

The Albert Lea wrestling team took six athletes to the annual Rumble on the Red Tournament at the Fargo Dome in Fargo, North Dakota, Friday and Saturday.

Of the six Tigers, three made their way onto the podium with the top six finishes. The Tigers also took 18th place as a team out of a total of 58 other schools.

Freshman Aivin Wasmoen wrestled at 106 pounds for Albert Lea. Wasmoen opened the tournament with a 10-0 major decision win before falling to a 9-0 major decision in the second round. Once in the consolation bracket, Wasmoen won his first match with an 8-0 major decision and lost his second in a 10-3 decision. Wasmoen went 2-2 in the tournament and did not place, while scoring five team points.

Sophomore Carter Miller wrestled at 126 pounds and finished the tournament off the podium with a 1-2 record overall. Miller lost his opening-round match via a 9-1 major decision, but found redemption in the first round of consolations, winning in a 7-2 decision. He lost by a second-period pinfall in the second round of the consolation bracket and scored one team point.

Sophomore Cam Davis placed fourth overall for the Tigers at 132 pounds, going 5-2 in the tournament. His two losses came from the same opponent in one-point decisions. Davis cruised in his first two matches winning by a 20-3 tech fall and a 15-5 major decision. He fell in a 7-6 decision in the quarterfinals, but stormed back with three straight wins to get to the third place match. His consolation wins came via an 8-2 decision, a first-period fall and a 3-1 decision. He lost the third-place match 5-4. He scored 18.5 total team points throughout the tournament.

Freshman Cole Glazier was the top finisher for Albert Lea, taking third place at 145 pounds. Glazier won his first three matches with a 18-3 technical fall, a 12-3 major decision and a 21-8 major decision. Glazier lost his semifinal match 4-2, before coming back and winning the consolation semifinal 5-1 and the third-place match 6-3. He scored a total of 19.5 team points.

Freshman Derrick McMillian wrestled at 152 pounds, finishing 2-2 and not placing. McMillian won in a 5-3 sudden victory in the opening round and fell to a third-period pinfall in round two. He dominated in his first consolation match 17-2 and lost in the first period of the third-round consolations. McMillian scored 4.5 team points.

Junior Caleb Talamantes was the final wrestler for the Tigers, finishing in sixth place with a 4-3 record. Talamantes started the tournament hot with four straight victories, including an 8-0 major decision, a 12-8 decision, a third-period fall and a 3-2 decision. In the semifinal match, Talamantes fell in a 6-1 decision, then a 5-3 decision in the consolation semis and finally a 11-8 decision in the fifth-place match. Talamantes scored 14 team points.

The Tigers will be back in action Thursday when the whole team will wrestle at a quad meet in Stillwater.
