Area under blizzard warning as winds increasing

Blizzard conditions are likely across south central Minnesota today as as high winds create blowing snow.

According to the National Weather Service, Freeborn County is under a blizzard warning until 6 p.m. today.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation has reported whiteout conditions developing as winds are spreading eastward across southern Minnesota. Blizzard conditions are expected to reach the Interstate 35 corridor by 9 a.m.

The Weather Service states wind gusts to 55 mph are possible with visibilities near zero at times for the rest of the day. The worst conditions are expected in west central into south central Minnesota throughout the day.

Falling temperatures into the single digits above and below zero will also lead to icy roads and cold wind chills this afternoon.

People should plan on slippery road conditions and reduced visibility. Travel may become nearly impossible, and travel is not advised.

The Weather Service states cold wind chills as low as 30 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
