To interim Albert Lea-Freeborn County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Torrey Zimmerman.

Hats off to Torrey Zimmerman, founder and owner of Zimmerman, Steele & Gray mediation and consulting firm, who stepped up as interim executive director of the chamber last month. Zimmerman, who runs his firm out of The Outlet in downtown Albert Lea, said he was approached to step in to the temporary role on a contract basis. Having worked with nonprofits and other organizations through his business before, Zimmerman said he has been an interim director or leader for other organizations in the past. He said it gives the groups time to find the right person for the job, instead of rushing the search in order to keep operations consistent.

We wish Zimmerman the best in the interim role as the chamber board searches for a permanent director.

To a slight decrease in traffic deaths on Minnesota roads in 2019 compared to 2018.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety this week released preliminary numbers showing there were 364 traffic deaths on Minnesota roads in 2019, compared to 381 in 2018.

While this is a decrease, much more can still be done to reduce that number further.

According to the state agency, at least 27 of those deaths were distraction-related, and 71 were speed-related.

At least 102 were alcohol-related, and 72 of the people who died were not wearing their seat belts.

We encourage people to practice safe driving habits as we begin another year.

Buckle up, obey the speed limits, put away your phones and other distractions, and never get behind the wheel if you have been drinking.

To Albert Lea Area Schools teachers.

It’s that time of year again to recognize teachers in the Albert Lea school district who are making a difference.

The district and the Albert Lea Education Association are accepting nominations for Teacher of the Year. The purpose of the program is to express appreciation to the outstanding educators whose examples serve as inspiration to parents, students and fellow teachers.

According to the nomination form, anyone who is teaching in the district is eligible for nomination, but finalists must have completed at least three full school years in the district.

To nominate a teacher, people are asked to visit the district’s website at alschools.org. The link to the nomination form is on the home page. Nominations are due by Jan. 21.
