Letter: Bernie is only candidate with courage, vision

A couple weeks ago, we went to hear Bernie Sanders in Mason City. We had seen him before in 2015, when he spoke in a little town south of Northwood. He is the same Bernie! I’ve been reflecting about what draws me to support him for president. After listening to the Democrats’ last debate, I understand, for he is the only candidate that offers our country hope. He is not afraid to tackle the real problems and issues that we, the people, are struggling with every day. President Trump is obviously focused on what can make the rich, richer.
The other Democratic candidates are focused on telling us why Bernie’s solutions won’t work and at the same time keeping their corporate donors happy. Bernie has been consistent. Bernie understands climate change and is not afraid to hold the fossil fuel industry accountable. He recognizes the urgency of investing in the solar and wind industry to provide jobs. Health care for all has been discussed since Teddy Roosevelt’s time. Our capitalist society has twisted it to make money off others’ pain. The pharmaceutical industry tries to justify their outrageous prices in the name of research. Recently, I asked a specialist for any research being done in my “pre-existing” condition, similar to a study I saw was being done in Australia. He explained to me that there appears to be less research funded in the United States because they found most of the results were not accurate. Findings were changed to fit for funding. It appears integrity is disappearing throughout our country.
Our president is unable to be truthful and is concentrating on undoing the environmental protections that were put in place to protect our citizens. Bernie Sanders’ values have been consistent. I trust him. He supports unions, free public colleges, ending cash bail and private prisons, universal child care, high-speed internet for all, corporate accountability, responsible immigration and foreign policy, free and fair elections, creating a nation where all are treated equally, protecting and expanding Social Security, fair trade, sensible gun laws, real Wall Street reform, the Green New Deal and, most of all, “Medicare for all” a single-payer, national health insurance program to provide “everyone” in America with comprehensive health care coverage. No networks, no additional premiums, no deductibles, no copays, no surprise bills. It will include dental, hearing, vision, long-term care, in- and out-patients services, mental health, substance abuse treatment, reproductive and maternity care, prescription drugs and more. Bernie Sanders is the only candidate with the courage, vision and fortitude to tackle all that needs to be done to create a better life for all of us.
