Administrator’s Corner By Paul Durbahn
It’s been a busy winter at Albert Lea High School. Our winter athletic seasons are coming to a close, and some students are starting to get a jump on their spring workouts. Our spring activity registration window is currently open. Our music programs will be showcased in concert this week, and we look forward to our school talent show Tigers Roar as well as our spring play “Clue.”
This winter we offered girls’ and boys’ junior high basketball programs through the district again, and that offering was the start of our process of building middle school sports back into our activities that we offer here at ALHS. It has been a number of years since we have offered a full set of middle school programs. We will continue to build programs around the needs of our community.
With the warmer weather on the horizon, many will look to attend track meets in Albert Lea. Our track, when the project is completed, will be one of the most sought after facilities in the conference. As planned when the project began, some of our programs will be off site this spring as we complete the work at the Hammer Complex. Our baseball and softball fields won’t be entirely ready, leaving our softball team to play their home games at Snyder complex and our baseball team working the lower level games between Hayek Field and Southwest Middle School this year. When completed, potentially for the 2021 season, Hammer Complex will house our JV and varsity softball teams and our ninth and JV baseball teams. Varsity baseball will continue to be played at Hayek field. Our girls’ and boys’ golf teams will each host two home meets this season one at each local course.
One other project we’re working on as a district is an update to our current weight room. This project is anticipated to be completed for the end of the school year. The hope is this upgrade will impact all our student athletes and programs. Those students currently preparing for the spring season can agree it will be a welcomed update!
