The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Albert Lea and the surrounding area Saturday night through Sunday afternoon.

The area is expected to receive 5 to 8 inches of snow.

The Weather Service states the heaviest snow will be Sunday morning, with snowfall rates of an inch per hour likely. In addition, northerly wind gusts of 25 to 30 mph Sunday afternoon could lead to drifting snow and reduced visibility.

People are advised to adjust travel plans or allow extra time for travel, as roads will become snow-covered and slippery.

If people have to travel they should keep a charged cell phone, warm clothes, food and water in their vehicle in case of an emergency.
