When I was a very young man, I attended a wedding of a family friend. As the couple knelt at the altar for the blessing, the minister announced that the couple requested the congregation sing a certain hymn written by Edward Mote. They asked for this to be sung over them as the declaration of their new life together. For the first time, these words fell on my ears,

“My hope is built on nothing less

Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness

I dare not trust the sweetest frame

but wholly lean on Jesus’ name

On Christ, the solid rock I stand

All other ground is sinking sand

All other ground is sinking sand”

As we experience this interesting season of our lives, I find the words to this song ever more comforting, ever more meaningful, and ever more strengthening. It seems that everything around us that can be shaken is being shaken. Therefore, the need to have a place of unshakeable standing is more important today than ever before. The psalmist declared in Psalms 125, “Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people both now and forevermore.“

Those who have established themselves in Jehovah will stand unshakeable, though everything around them is being shaken, because their trust is in the Lord. They will find peace in knowing that the Lord surrounds them by his love, his grace, his peace and his strength. Take courage today. Let your heart be cheerful, for the Lord is the strength of your life.
