COVID-19 cases continue to rise in area counties

New lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported in four area counties on Thursday, according to the Minnesota Department of Health.

Steele County saw the largest increase with eight new cases, pushing its total to 85 cases.

Freeborn County had five new cases and has now had 52 cases. The new cases include one child under 10, a person between the ages of 10 and 20, two people in their 30s and one person in their 40s, according to the Freeborn County Public Health Department.

Of the county’s total cases, 24 are active, and 28 are out of isolation. The Health Department stated of the total cases in Freeborn County, six have been hospitalized at some time during their illness.

The Minnesota Department of Health stated Mower County had two new cases, pushing its total to 50, and Faribault County had one, with a new total of nine cases. No new cases were reported in Waseca County.

Statewide, total positive cases increased to 13,435 cases, an increase in 523 cases. Of the total cases, 9,136 are no longer in isolation, and 663 people have died, an increase in 25 from the previous day. Of the total deaths, 537 resided in long-term care or assisted living facilities.

The Minnesota Department of Health stated 498 people are hospitalized as of today, including 203 in intensive care.

The highest number of overall cases have been reported in Hennepin County, with 4,331 cases and 441 deaths. Counties with the next highest numbers are Stearns County with 1,609 cases and Nobles County with 1,319.

Ramsey County has had 1,167 cases, and Anoka County has had 678 cases. Olmsted County has had 399 cases, and Rice County has had 181.

The department stated 128,752 tests have been completed, including 15,885 through the Minnesota Department of Health’s public health lab and 112,867 through external laboratories.
