GLENVILLE — Communities in the area continue to show their support for their local high school spring sports teams, especially the seniors who are missing out on their final year of play. The most recent example is displayed at the Glenville-Emmons softball field, where six signs hang to honor the seniors of this year’s softball and baseball teams.

Four yellow softball signs and two white baseball signs hang with each senior’s first name and number. Kennedy Severtson, Chloe Anderson, Sydney Rasmusson and Jadelyn Williamson are this year’s seniors on the softball team, and Dawson Dahlum and Dylan Gerber were this year’s seniors on the baseball team.

Lisa Ziebell, the head softball coach, used some money from the softball club account to have the signs made.

“I wanted to do something for these seniors,” Ziebell said. “I feel bad, not just for the seniors, but for all the players. Obviously school is the most important, but for a lot of these kids sports is a high priority. To have their entire season taken away is going to be hard.”

The signs, made by local Glenville company Black Iron Manufacturing, went up May 13. Ziebell said she hopes to take the signs down and have them displayed at the Glenville-Emmons graduation ceremony set for Friday evening in the high school parking lot. When the signs are done being displayed on the field backstop, they will be given to each of the seniors as a gift.

Ziebell said she sent a picture to the girls on the softball team as soon as she hung them up on the backstop. She said they were all very receptive and grateful for the signs.

“These seniors have been through a lot of changes,” Ziebell said. “For the softball players, they’ve had to step up and play varsity since they were in eighth grade because of our numbers. They all weathered that storm really well. Now, with the challenge of the virus, I told them ‘You have all gotten stronger through the years and this is just going to make you even stronger.’ Going through this is going to make them more driven to succeed and to prove to others that nothing can hold them back.”
