Letter: Why can’t common sense rule decisions?

I have read and read and read opinions on this whole virus pandemic. It basically comes down to two sides. One, the government is using this to push their weight around, to scare the citizens, to decide who can and can’t stay open and put the country out of work. Two, those interested in keeping the citizens, both young and old, safe.

This fight will go on and on for at least the next decade. I, personally, cannot believe that state or federal government members (even though I don’t trust any of them) would want to just throw everybody out of work. When no one works, they don’t get their precious tax money. They’re losing out on the important tax funds they use to pay for welfare and medical care for illegal immigrants, tax funds to pay for their salary increases, unnecessary travel, parties, special health insurance, new furniture for their offices and more. They’re also sending out money to the citizens of this country, although some want those funds to go to illegal immigrants also, and now they want to give everyone $1,200 to $2,000 for an individual and more for a family, per month from now to three months after the country is reopened, plus sending out an extra $600 a week in unemployment funds. If people aren’t working, the governments are not getting their tax money to pay for all of this. So we can all agree to disagree, but I hope we all want this crisis to end, the shutdown to end and people to get back to their normal activities. Why can’t common sense rule this whole thing? Why can’t we just follow some simple things: to wash our hands more, wear a mask and keep our distance so we can open back up safely? Is that really too much to ask?
