With temperatures and humidity on the rise this week, we are reminded just how important it is to remember the effects that extreme heat can have on both people and animals.

According to the National Weather Service, the heat index for Albert Lea was expected to reach 98 degrees on Tuesday, and summer-like temperatures are expected all week with highs in the 80s. This is only the beginning of summer and many more days of heat will likely come.

The Weather Service offers the following advice to help people beat the heat:

• Avoid strenuous activity.

• Stay in shade when possible outdoors.

• Provide shade and water for pets.

• Check on neighbors.

• Never leave pets or children in vehicles for any length of time.

People are encouraged to call 911 for any of the following symptoms: hot, dry skin; confusion; loss of consciousness; chest pains or shortness of breath. Remember heat-induced illnesses can occur, and some can even result in death.
