LAKE MILLS — After falling to Riceville by one run Tuesday night, the Lake Mills softball team was looking to get back on the winning path when it hosted Bishop Garrigan Friday night.

Despite battling back to tie the game 6-6 after trailing by five, the Bulldogs failed to keep up with the Golden Bears, falling 18-7.

Lake Mills jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when senior Jessa Gasteiger reached on a single and was promptly batted in by freshman Maddie Edwards.

The Bulldogs gave up three runs in the second inning and three more in the third to fall in a 6-1 hole, before a hitting spree in the bottom of the third brought them back.

Gasteiger, Edwards, freshman Natalie Brandenburg and senior Hope Levine strung together four consecutive hits to bring the Bulldogs back and tie the game 6-6.

The momentum was quickly cut short when the Golden Bears scored 12 runs through the next three innings to take a commanding lead.

Senior Megan Groe hit an RBI single in the fifth, but it wasn’t enough to extend the game.

The Bulldogs fall to 1-2 on the season and will play again Monday when they hit the road to take on the Green Devils of Osage.
