The editor of the Albert Lea Tribune wrote a very good column that was published in the Tribune on May 6. This column had to do with unity and civility among us during any discourse. She asked the question, “Why does there have to be name-calling and personal attacks?”

Unfortunately, a number of habitual letter writers in our area either did not read that column or have chosen to ignore it.

In many recent letters to the editor, that hateful name-calling, slandering and personal attacks continue. This constant bashing of others who dare to have a different opinion or idea is neither proper nor fruitful. It is actually very counterproductive. Honey is a much better attractant than vinegar.

We are now witnessing in a graphic manner the result of pent-up anger and hatred on both sides of the coin! It is shameful to know that this madness actually started due to the actions of Minnesotans.

Sadly, the many partisan career politicians who have lost touch and regard for their responsiblity to their constituents and most of the TV news media are adding fuel to the fire with constant partisanship, fear mongering, purposely divisive reporting and personal attacks.

Among all of this, I must again compliment April Jeppson, who continues to write uplifting columns of sharing and caring, always looking for something positive in every situation.

Hopefully, others may begin to emulate this style of correspondence, and before acting out, speaking out or writing articles, stop and ask themselves, “What would Jesus think about this?”
