The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory as a major winter storm is moving into the region.

The advisory, for Freeborn, Steele and Waseca counties, remains in effect until noon Tuesday.

The weather agency stated mixed precipitation was expected, with total snow and sleet accumulations of up to 1 inch possible, along with a light glaze of ice.

Winds could gust as high as 45 mph.

Motorists should plan on slippery road conditions, as the hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute. People should slow down and use caution while traveling.

The Weather Service states after the first round of precipitation today and Wednesday, a second part of the storm is expected to come Thursday through Saturday with prolonged light to moderate snow.

Snow accumulation of a few inches is possible.
