Residents begin digging out from snowstorm

Varying snow totals came in Thursday from the two-day storm that hit most of the state.
Albert Lea’s Wastewater Treatment Plant recorded a total of 6 1/2 inches of snow for the storm — 3 as of 8 a.m. Wednesday and another 3 1/2 inches through Thursday morning. Other totals on the National Weather Service report 11 inches in Albert Lea, 9.7 inches in Alden and 8 in Austin. North Mankato reported 18 inches and Apple Valley reported 19.
Though most streets in Albert Lea had been cleared as of 9:30 a.m., motorists should plan on slippery road conditions.
Roads in and around Albert Lea were listed as partially or completely covered in snow, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Travel was still not advised west of Blue Earth, and Interstate 90 was closed east of Worthington through the South Dakota border.
The weather agency states some snow drifts may be several feet deep, making travel nearly impossible.
