City hosting open house to provide information, get input on proposed work at rec facilities

To learn more and provide input about proposed projects for Albert Lea rec facilities, the city invites local residents to an open house from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at City Arena, 701 Lake Chapeau Drive, according to a press release.

The city is considering several projects for long-term maintenance, energy savings and enhancements. The projects total $10.9 million with a net cost to taxpayers of $8.4 million after federal funding of $2.5 million for energy savings. The final cost will depend on which projects the Albert Lea City Council decides to pursue.

The projects would sustain or enhance the following four facilities:

City Arena, 701 Lake Chapeau Drive
$6.3 million net cost in projects ($8.8 million less $2.5 million in federal funding)

Projects include:

  • Repairing support beams of the main building, which is nearly 60 years old
  • Replacing the floor of the Colstrup rink due to heaving
  • Replacing the two separate refrigeration systems for both rinks with one system; one system is 26 years old and starting to fail
  • Replacing the lighting with LEDs to reduce energy use
  • Expanding the lobby for better security and more space for users
  • Replacing other equipment or fixtures beyond their life expectancy

Aquatic Center, 321 James Ave.

$1.5 million in projects

  • The Aquatic Center needs to replace equipment that is starting to fail, including:

• Boilers

• Water heaters

• Electrical systems

  • Replacing the lighting with LEDs would reduce energy use.
  • Limited remodeling would make some areas more family-friendly and gender-neutral.

Marion Ross Performing Arts Center, 147 N. Broadway Ave.

$339,000 in projects

Projects would include:

  • Replacing the front windows due to seals breaking
  • Replacing the front doors to improve access for people with disabilities
  • LED lighting to reduce energy use
  • Water conservation measures
  • HVAC automation to reduce energy use

Splash Pad, 107 Fountain St.

$250,000 for restrooms

Public restrooms in this location would serve the downtown area, including popular events such as the Farmers Market and Thursdays on Fountain.
