The Albert Lea Public Library is seeking applicants to fill an open seat on its advisory board. This group helps the library connect residents with books they want, the information they need and the community they live in.
Jamaira Escobar, a current member of the advisory board, finds the volunteer work to be rewarding by being able to participate and give back to the community simply by being part of such a great team.
“I was drawn to the board because I wanted to be able to offer fresh perspectives to the library, enabling us to better serve the community and support those who are disadvantaged by language,” she said.
Escobar knows first-hand the positive impact that libraries have on community members. She found solace and inspiration in libraries during her youth.
“I spent a lot of time after school at the Chicago Public Library. It was good to see familiar faces! It was a safe space for me to hang out with friends, meet new people, and get lost in my imagination while reading,” she said.
In the past year, the Albert Lea Public Library has increased its number of patrons and circulation of materials after eliminating late fines on all materials. The library has also increased its outreach to underserved populations and continued its popular programming, including magic shows for children and book clubs for adults.
The Library Advisory Board consists of seven members and meets four times a year. Applicants must be at least age 18, preferably a resident of Albert Lea, and agree to serve a four-year term. Apply online at https://cityofalbertlea.org/boards-and-commissions/ or contact the mayor’s office at 507-377-4330. After reviewing applications, Mayor Rich Murray will recommend an appointment to the Albert Lea City Council for approval.
