Albert Lea’s Big Freeze Winter Festival returns this weekend for 16th annual celebration

Get ready to embrace the winter wonderland as The Big Freeze returns to Albert Lea for its 16th annual community-wide celebration on Saturday. This beloved winter festival with exciting activities for all ages promises a day full of outdoor fun, friendly competition and delicious food across multiple locations in town.

Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, a foodie or just looking for some winter excitement, there’s something for everyone.

Event highlights:

Medallion Hunt (Started Monday): Sponsored by the Albert Lea-Freeborn County Chamber of Commerce.

Friday night: Sponsored by the 112 on Broadway, live music with Papa J acoustic starting at 6:30 p.m.

Plunge for the Park (11 a.m. at Edgewater Bay): Take the plunge into the frozen lake to raise money for the inclusive playground project.

A Real Mermaid Experience (noon to 2 p.m. at HeartWaves Studio): Meet Mermaid Analise, snap photos and enjoy fun ocean-themed activities!

Ice fishing tournament (1:30 to 3 p.m. at City Beach): Compete for the biggest catch and exciting prizes. All ages welcome, and minnows are provided. Sponsored by Alerus and Albert Lea Anglers.

Chili cookoff and bake sale (11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Edgewater Bay Pavilion: Warm up with tasty chili samples while supporting the inclusive playground.

Bloody and Beer Bar (11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Edgewater Bay Pavilion: Enjoy drinks served by 112 on Broadway.

Galentines Shopping Event (3 to 7 p.m. at downtown stores): Treat yourself with snacks, prizes and shopping specials at participating stores.

Story Show (7:30 p.m. at Marion Ross Performing Arts Center: Enjoy an evening of local storytelling while supporting the Freeborn County Community Promise Scholarship Fund.

Live music and Buff Bash (8:30 p.m. at 112 on Broadway): End the night with live music, (Will Barnett & Company) wear buffalo plaid, and get $1 off drinks.
