MacPhail Center for Music in March will launch a new choir for people living with dementia and their caregivers.

Directed by Diane Heaney, former Albert Lea High School choir director, the Lake Song Chorus will hold its first weekly rehearsal from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. March 27 at St. John’s Chapel — Luther Place campus.

The chorus is part of MacPhail’s Music for Life program, specifically designed for adults aged 55+. Lake Song will be MacPhail’s third choir serving families of those living with memory loss.

“We are thrilled to offer this program in Albert Lea, especially with a choir director as talented as Diane Heaney,” said program director Kristyn Rupp.

Accompanied by Bob Tewes, the chorus will meet weekly to sing old and new songs, learn vocal techniques and ensemble skills, share musical memories and build community. A culminating concert will allow the choir to display its musical accomplishments and demonstrate how members are defying dementia together through music. No previous singing experience is necessary.

“We invite anybody in our community who is living with dementia and their caregivers to join this unique, joy-filled choral experience,” said Heaney. “Music has a powerful impact on our brains, and it makes us happier and healthier. Plus, singing together is just pure fun.”

Persons living with dementia and their caregivers should register together as a pair. Other community members are also encouraged to join the chorus to provide support and experience the joy of making music together. The chorus will rehearse weekly from March 27 to June 5. Tuition is $25 per individual or $30 per couple.

There are three ways to register for the chorus:
