The shared superintendent of Glenville-Emmons and Alden-Conger schools has submitted his resignation, less than a year after starting in the joint role.

In front of the Glenville-Emmons school board on Wednesday, Allen Berg said serving as superintendent has been one of the most rewarding experiences of his career and he has been honored to work alongside dedicated staff, talented students and a community that values education.

“However, as I reflect on the future of our district, I recognize that there are differing views among individual board members and myself regarding the direction we should take,” Berg said. “While I remain passionate about our mission and goals, these differences make it difficult for me to lead effectively and align with our shared vision needed to move the district forward.

“I believe stepping aside is the best course of action for the district and for me personally. It is my hope that this decision will allow the board ample time to find a suitable replacement.”

His last day will be June 30.

Berg announced his resignation at Alden-Conger last week, and the action is expected to be formally accepted there on Friday.

After the meeting Wednesday, Berg said he has accepted a three-year superintendent contract in the Gibbon Fairfax Winthrop district, which he said is closer to family.

The Glenville-Emmons board had initial discussions at the meeting about next steps for filing the position and said the district will have to decide whether it wants to continue sharing the position with Alden-Conger or to hire a part-time person for the district or merge it with another position such as a principal or business manager, for example.

The Alden-Conger board is slated to make its decision on how to move forward on Friday.

Board Chairwoman Tabitha Page said she recognized both districts are going through some things right now that require extra attention. She said she also didn’t see the district wanting to go back into scenario where Alden-Conger had 60% of the superintendent’s time and Glenville-Emmons had 40%. The district has benefited from having a 50/50 split.

Board member Lisa Hajek said if the board were willing to look at a position that is a half-time superintendent and half-time principal, she would be worried that it may limit the number of candidates applying. She said someone who has gone through all of the work to get a superintendent license would likely not just want to work as a part-time superintendent and would want a full-time superintendent position.

Page said she would get prices from the Minnesota School Boards Association for conducting a search.
