  • Megan Kortan scored 23 points to lead the Albert Lea girls’ basketball team in their 50-35 loss to Byron at the high school gym. With the loss, coach Lindsey Hugstad-Vaa’s team was 2-18 on the year.
  • In the Valley Conference tournament, the Alden-Conger boys’ basketball team was defeated 73-52 by Granada-Huntley/East Chain/Truman. Ty Lerum led the Knights with 13 points with Colton Opsahl adding 11.
  • NRHEG graduate Carli Wagner scored 25 points to lead the Minnesota Gophers women’s basketball team to an 86-79 win over Michigan State.
  • Former Albert Lea Tigers athlete Bryce DeBoer set a school record for Bethel University with a toss of 54-5 1/4 in the weight throw at the St. Thomas Invitational in St. Paul.

  • The Albert Lea boys’ basketball team was defeated by sixth-ranked Mankato East 73-56. Parker Skophammer led the Tigers with 15 points with Michael Behrends and Ryan Moore adding 11.
  • The No. 1-ranked Owatonna Huskies defeated the Albert Lea Tigers wrestling team 34-21 to claim the Section 1AAA championship at the Mayo Civic Center. Logan Kortan, Eric Johnson, Beau Hansen, Zach McGinnis, Brandon Klukow and Ben Berhow picked up wins for the Tigers.
  • Soren Colstrup had four goals and Tim and Tom Furland each added one as Motor Inn defeated Farmers Insurance 6-3 in Albert Lea Parks and Recreation in-house squirts hockey play.
  • Arizona businessman Reggie Fowler had an agreement to purchase the Minnesota Vikings for a published report of $625 million from owner Red McCombs.

  • The Albert Lea Jaycees took third place in the Jaycees district basketball tournament in Janesville. Al Batt scored 20 points and Chuck Hinkley added 14 in the 63-33 win for third place over Waseca.
  • The Albert Lea hockey team defeated Owatonna 5-1. Roy Nystrom said it was the biggest win in his Tiger coaching career. Vinny Cerrato scored two goals with Ross Dahl, Kevin Brandt and Greg Hanson adding one.
  • Lakeview school won the local grade school wrestling tournament over Ramsey, Hayward, Sibley, Halverson, Hollandale and Hawthorne. In the 61-75-pound weight category, Gary Jerdee finished first with Mark Indrelie second and Troy Eggum third.
  • Virginia native Jack Carlson was recalled by the Minnesota Fighting Saints from their farm club in Johnstown, Pa., where he had 28 goals and 24 assists in 50 games to go along with 246 penalty minutes.
  • The Albert Lea girls’ basketball team advanced to the semi-finals of the first annual District Two basketball tournament with a 38-20 win over Austin Pacelli. Sherri Hultgren led the Tigerettes with 15 points with Kristi Jenson adding eight.
  • The Alden-Conger wrestling team had pins from Randy Whelan and Bob Scrabeck to lead them to a 33-11 win over Wells.
  • In Gopher Conference boys’ basketball play, Emmons defeated Glenville 65-49, behind 22 points from Gay Iverson. Dwight Greibrok scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Trojans.
  • Albert Lea track and field coach Howard Melom announced the team would sell candy to help finance the activities for the organization’s summer events.
  • The Albert Lea girls’ gymnastics team was defeated 70.95 to 63.70 by Rochester Mayo. Mary Jacobus was the only first-place finish for the Tigerettes with a 7.0 score on the uneven bars.

The Albert Lea High School Athletic Hall of Fame Committee is looking for new nominations for the upcoming event later this summer. Nomination forms can be picked up at Strong Insurance Agency at 209 S. Washington in Albert Lea or on the Albert Lea Education Foundation website.
