A strong early spring weather system is set to move into Minnesota later today into Wednesday starting with rain and quickly changing into snow.

According to the National Weather Service, the falling snow combined with strong wind gusts between 45 and 55 mph will create a period of blizzard conditions. Blowing and drifting snow with whiteout conditions will make travel dangerous at times Tuesday night into part of Wednesday morning.

The Weather Service has placed Albert Lea and the surrounding area into a blizzard warning from 9 p.m. Tuesday to 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Total snow accumulations between 4 and 8 inches are possible.

The Weather Service warns whiteout conditions are expected and will make travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening.

The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday morning commute, and strong winds could cause damage to trees and power lines.

Travel should be restricted to emergencies only.

If people must travel, they should have a winter survival kit with them. If they get stranded, they should stay with their vehicle.
