March is known throughout the state as Minnesota FoodShare Month.
It began in 1982 as a campaign advanced by congregations to restock food shelves in the seven-county Twin Cities metropolitan area. It was so successful that year, that it became a statewide initiative and has continued ever since.
Throughout the month organizations, churches, businesses and individuals help stock and support the food shelves throughout the state. Because a portion of all financial gifts and food donated are proportionately matched through April 6, it is the perfect time to give if you have the means to do so.
While all donations are helpful, monetary donations can be stretched further through resources available to the food shelves.
According to Minnesota Food Share, Minnesotans made an estimated record-breaking 9 million visits to food shelves in 2024. This is up 20% from the previous record of 7.5 million set in 2023. The organization states annual visits to food shelves are now 150% higher than they were prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The need is high, and we encourage you to do your part if you’re able to support these food shelves and your fellow community members who are utilizing these resources.
