After a tough opening round for the four NRHEG state wrestling qualifiers, the Panthers were back in action Friday night at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
At the beginning of the second session, one wrestler was still in contention for a championship, while the three others awaited the results of their quarterfinals to see if they would advance into the consolation bracket.
By the end of the night none of them remained, ending their season short of the final day at state wrestling.
At 172 pounds, sophomore Ryan Schlaak was the lone Panther left on the championship side of the bracket after the morning session. Opening up the evening session with a quarterfinal matchup with No. 5-ranked Cameron Halvorson of Barnesville. Schlaak was overpowered by the ranked opponent and lost a 15-2 major decision, relegating him to the consolation bracket.
In his first round of consolations, Schlaak met No. 10 Brady Yyourczek of Royalton-Upsala. Despite a closer contest, Shlaak came up short in an 8-3 decision. Schlaak’s sophomore season comes to an end with a 23-8 record.
Seventh grader Grahm Jacobson was awarded a wrestleback and consolation bracket spot at 107 pounds after his opening round opponent was able to move beyond the quarterfinal round. In the first round of consolations, Jacobson faced the tall task of taking on No. 6 Noah Jensen of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa. Jacobson was defeated 17-1 in a major decision. He ends his season with a 21-22 record.
Senior Harbor Cromwell was also awarded a wrestleback at 160 pounds. Unfortunately for Cromwell, he met a similar fate as Jacobson, taking on No. 3 Simon Boeckman of Holdingford. Crowell lost a 12-0 major decision and ends his senior campaign with a 23-15 record.
NRHEG’s final qualifier, senior Cole Hutchens did not get a wrestleback opportunity at 215 pounds after losing in his opening round match. Hutchens ends this season with an 8-25 record.
