- Albert Lea Tigers wrestling coach Larry Goodnature was honored as the Section 1AA Coach of the Year.
- The Albert Lea girls’ basketball team defeated Mankato East 49-44 at the high school gym. Megan Kortan, who in her previous game had surpassed the 1,000-point scoring mark in her career, led the Tigers with 22 points.
- The Albert Lea Tigers wrestling team was heading to the state meet after compiling a 33-1 record in the regular season. Zach Glazier, Garrett Aldrich, Devin Nelson, Tim Christianson, Gavin Ignaszewski, Beau Johnsrud and Tristan Westerlund were going to be representing the Tigers in the individual portion of the state meet.
20 years
- The Albert Lea boys’ hockey team defeated Mankato East 7-3 to earn their second trip in a row to the state hockey tournament. Beau Larson, Tony Dugstad, Peter Bracker, Quinn Ellingson, Jon Breuer, Cory Ellertson and Andy McKinney scored goals for the Tigers.
- Albert Lea wrestlers Brandon Klukow, Ben Berhow and Logan Kortan won both of their matches at the Minnesota State Wrestling Tournament to advance to the semi-finals.
- The Albert Lea girls’ basketball team erased an 18-point first half deficit to defeat Austin 51-44 in a Section 1AAA opening round game played at the Ove Berven gym in Austin. Hali Hendrickson scored 12 points and Liz Thompson added 10 to lead the Tigers.
- Levi Hacker had four goals and added one assist to lead Martin’s Schwinn to a 7-1 victory over Tiger City Sports in the season ending championship game of Albert Lea Parks and Recreation squirt hockey.
50 years
- Dwight Gingerich, Bruce Anderson and Larry Kihlstadius were representing Albert Lea at the Minnesota State Wrestling Tournament.
- In a defensive battle played at the Southwest gym, Mankato West defeated the Albert Lea boys’ basketball team 38-35. Bob McCamy and Rich Wendorff led the Tigers with 10 points.
- Albert Lea’s Scott Farnes signed a tender to attend and play football for the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
- The Albert Lea hockey team was defeated by top-ranked Bloomington Lincoln 8-4. Ross Dahl had a hat trick for the Tigers with Dale Henrickson adding the other goal.
- The Albert Lea girls’ gymnastics team placed seventh overall at the Big Nine Conference meet held in Winona. Mary Jacobus had the top finish for the Tigerettes, placing second in the uneven bars.
- Albert Lea Tigers swimmer Robin Sanders placed third in the 100 butterfly at the section meet to qualify for the state swimming meet.
- Brookside defeated Southwest 21-18 in the finals of an eight-team junior high basketball tournament held at the Southwest gym.
- Minnesota Twins outfielder Steve Braun lost his arbitration case as he was awarded a salary of $36,500 for the upcoming season instead of the $39,500 he had asked for.
- The Minnesota North Stars were defeated by the Los Angeles Kings 7-4 at the Forum in Los Angeles. Norm Gratton, Murray Oliver, Doug Rombough and Dennis Hextall scored for the Stars.
