In addition to the heavy snow, northerly winds of 30 to 40 mph will develop causing blowing and drifting snow. In south central Minnesota, wind gusts could exceed 45 mph, which could lead to whiteout conditions.

The Weather Service warns that travel could be very difficult and that strong winds could cause extensive damage to trees and power lines. Travel should be restricted to emergencies only.

The blizzard warning is in effect from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday. Other cities included in the blizzard warning include Owatonna, Mankato, Fairmont, Blue and Waseca.
