Albert Lea team drops one-run games to Winona, Stewartville

The Albert Lea High School softball team played host to Winona on Saturday going into extra innings before falling 11-10 in a game willed with a combined 30 hits between the two teams.

Albert Lea fell behind early, giving up five runs in the top of the first inning.

The game was tied 6-6 going into the bottom of the sixth inning when sophomore Maggie Olson hit a line drive homerun off the scoreboard in left field. The Tigers would add one more that inning to take an 8-6 lead going into the seventh inning.

The Winhawks answered with four runs of their own to take a 10-8 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.

Sophomore Sienna Murray found her way on base and scored on a double from junior Hanna Austinson. Singles by Olson, Hannah Schuhmacher and Nevaeh Wacholz put in one more run to tie it up at 10-10 and go into extra innings. Winona was able to capitalize and push a run through. The Tigers weren’t able to capitalize on having runners in scoring position and fell 11-10 in eight innings.

Leading the way for the Tigers was Olson who was 4-5 on the day, followed by Nevaeh Wacholz going 3-4. Austinson, Schumacher, Machenzie Johnson and Sienna Murray added two hits apiece, and Keira Erickson, Taylor Johnson and Jenna Balfe each had a hit for the Tigers.

Stewartville came to town on Monday in what came down to be a defensive dual. Senior Mackenzie Johnson took the loss despite giving up only three hits over seven innings.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Austinson walked and scored on a double by Erickson. That would remain the score until the seventh inning when Stewartville was able to capitalize and put two in the board.

Jenna Balfe was strong at the plate going 2 for 3 for the Tigers. Erickson, Wacholz, and Mackenzie Johnson each added a hit for the Tigers.
