To the crews beginning work at the site of the new Aldi grocery store.

The city of Albert Lea announced this week it had issued the building permit for the new $2.5 million Aldi grocery store, and already there have been crews out at the site preparing the land for the new building.

The store is being built at 1406 Blake Ave., near the intersection of Blake Avenue and East Main Street and will provide another grocery option for residents. The discount supermarket chain is known for its simplicity, efficiency and low prices.

This has been a long-awaited step for many in the community, and we are excited to see the construction take place.

To the Albert Lea High School students and their teacher recognized this week by C-SPAN and Spectrum for contest prize.

Congratulations to Albert Lea students Bryant Johnston, Sam Stay and Benjamin Schulz and their teacher, Jim Haney, who were recognized this week by C-SPAN and Spectrum for their third-place win in C-SPAN’s annual video documentary competition.

The students’ video, “Energy in America” looked at the importance of transitioning to clean energy sources, especially nuclear power. It was selected from over 1,700 entries from students representing 42 different states

Each of the students earned $500, and Haney received $250.

We congratulate them for this accomplishment and for Haney, who led the effort. Not only did the students learn great skills by putting the video together, but they were able to address important topics.

To those participating in the Lakes Clean-up Day.

Thank you to those who are volunteering their time today to get out and help clean up trash around our lakes.

The lakes are the crown jewels of our community, but unfortunately some still make the decision to litter when they’re out on the lake or enjoying the space around them.

Even worse, some still even choose to intentionally dump larger items in them as well.

Over the years, the crews who have participated in this Lakes Clean-Up Day have found some interesting finds, not only trash but tires and other larger items.

We thank the Shell Rock River Watershed District, the Albert Lea Lakes Foundation and the Albert Lea Anglers, who make this event a priority and help organize this event.

A special shout-out to the people who make an effort all year-long to keep our lakes clean and who go out of their way to clean up after others. Your time and effort is much appreciated.
