- Northwood-Kensett junior Hattie Davidson was named the Albert Lea Tribune’s All-Area Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year after averaging 20.2 points per game for the Vikings.
- Albert Lea seniors Alex Claassen and Garrett Matz were selected to play in the Ted Brill Great 8 hockey tournament that was being played at the Wakota Arena in South St. Paul.
- The Minnesota Twins announced that Timberwolves forward Kevin Garnett would be throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at their home opener against the Kansas City Royals.
20 years
- The Minnesota Gophers women’s hockey team advanced to the Frozen Four with a 6-1 win over Providence. Kelly Stephens and Bobbi Ross both scored two goals in the win.
- After leading the Albert Lea boys’ basketball team to their first state tournament appearance since 1936, coach Matt Addington announced he had accepted a similar position at the new Lakeview South High School.
- Albert Lea’s Tyler Vandenheuvel and Chrissy Monson each placed third at the Minnesota State Elks Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest held in Hutchinson.
- Albert Lea junior Parker Skophammer was named honorable mention on the Associated Press’ All-State Boys’ Basketball Team.
50 years
- Minnesota Twins vice-president Clark Griffith told a state legislative committee the team would move if a new or improved stadium is not provided.
- Coach Brenda Ludtke’s Albert Lea High School girls’ swimming team defeated Winona 109-93 at the high school pool. The 200-yard medley relay team of Margo Lybeck, Sally Folven, Pam Knudson and Jody Blumer captured first with a time of 2:09.4.
- Albert Lea’s Bob McCamy was named to the Big Nine All-Conference Boys’ Basketball team. His teammate Steve Ladwig was named to the second team.
- The Albert Lea Moose Peewee hockey team ended their season with a 18-13-2 record under coaches Jim Vangen and Rex Stotts. Kevin Swanson led the team in scoring with 28 goals and 21 assists.
- The Minnesota North Stars suspended Henry Boucha indefinitely because he had reported late for team practices and violated team curfew on several occasions.
- Muhammed Ali held on to his world heavyweight boxing championship with a 15th round knockout of Chuck Wepner.
- Ray Keating of the Albert Lea Swim Club placed seventh in the 200-yard backstroke for 15-18 year olds at the State AAU Swimming Championships held in Bloomington.
- Trisha Reichl took first place in the group one tumblers at the Floor Exercise Tournament held at the Albert Lea YM-YWCA.
- Valu-Mart in Clarks Grove was advertising a 12-foot fishing boat for $149.95 and 10,000 assorted compact fishing lures for 77 cents each in an ad in the Tribune.
On to The Frozen Four
A backhand pass from Charlie Cerrato, son of 1977 Albert Lea High School graduate Vinny Cerrato, to Matt Dimarsico for the game winning goal in overtime gave the Penn State men’s hockey team a 3-2 win over UConn to advance the Nittany Lions to the NCAA Men’s Frozen Four, where they will be playing Boston University this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN2.
