Lately, Summer Madore’s group of fourth-grade multilingual learners at Hawthorne Elementary School has been deep in learning about the American Revolution. They have been learning about the big events, people and ideas that shaped this time in history. Her students have jumped right in, asking thoughtful questions, making connections, and using some seriously impressive vocabulary along the way. Words like liberty, revolution, taxation, patriot and loyalist are flying around her room as the students have learned what they mean and how they shaped the country.

They’ve been analyzing texts, applying high level thinking skills and will be creating visual projects like propaganda posters, and reflecting on what it means to stand up for what you believe in. Their discussions are passionate, insightful and full of voice.

What’s even more powerful is how many of them are connecting this history to their own experiences in learning a new language, finding their place in a new culture and using their voices in brave and meaningful ways. The American Revolution has turned into more than just a social studies unit. It’s become a chance for these kids to see themselves as thinkers, leaders and storytellers.

Madore said, “I’m beyond proud of their growth, not just in their academic language, but in their confidence, curiosity and collaboration. These students are proof that multilingual learners bring so much strength and insight to the classroom when they’re given the space and support to shine. And shine they have.”
