Albert Lea Area Schools on Tuesday announced the hiring of Preston Nelson as the new head wrestling coach and a health/physical education teacher.
According to a press release, Nelson brings with him a lifelong dedication to the sport of wrestling, a strong coaching background and a passion for mentoring student-athletes both on and off the mat.
A native of Adrian, Nelson grew up immersed in the sport under the guidance of his father, Gregg Nelson, the longtime and highly respected head wrestling coach at Adrian High School. Through his father’s mentorship, and the last three years of coaching in Sioux Valley, Preston Nelson learned the foundational values of leadership, accountability and team culture — lessons that continue to guide his coaching philosophy today, the release states..
Nelson had a standout wrestling career himself, culminating in a state tournament appearance his senior year. Known for his mental toughness and relentless work ethic, Nelson transitioned naturally into coaching. Over the past three years, while pursuing his college degree, he served as an assistant coach at Sioux Valley High School in Volga, South Dakota, where he played a key role in athlete development and team culture.
“I’ve been fortunate to learn from some of the best — starting with my dad — and I’m excited to bring that same level of commitment, energy and high standards to this program,” said Nelson. “Wrestling has shaped who I am. It’s more than a sport; it’s a way of life. I look forward to building a team that’s tough, respectful, disciplined and always improving — on the mat and in life.”
The release stated Nelson’s experience extends beyond coaching. He brings strong communication and leadership skills, a deep understanding of athlete development and a commitment to building a competitive, yet supportive team environment. His approach emphasizes individualized plans, high expectations and positive reinforcement to help student-athletes reach their full potential.
Nelson’s arrival signals a new chapter for Albert Lea wrestling. His combination of tradition, innovation and heart is expected to energize the program and inspire a new generation of Tigers.
