On Friday, the Albert Lea High School Band Department will present its final concert of the year. The performance will be at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium and will feature the Tiger Band, Symphonic Band and Concert Band. There is no fee for admission, but donations are encouraged to offset the expenses of the event.
At the concert, various awards will be presented, including the John Phillip Sousa Award for band and the Louis Armstrong Award for jazz. Graduating seniors will also be recognized.
Each band was given the opportunity to help choose one of their songs for the concert. The Tiger Band, which is made up of mostly eighth- and ninth-grade students, chose a medley of music from “The Lion King.” They will also be performing “A Builder’s Dream” by Adrian B. Sims and “Gently Touch the Sky” by Robert Sheldon. The mostly ninth- and 10th-grade Symphonic Band continued the animated theme with “Disney Blockbusters,” arranged by John Higgins. They are also performing “Alamo March,” “Last Ride of the Pony Express” and “Barn Dance.” The Concert Band, made up of mostly juniors and seniors, chose a medley from the movie “La La Land,” arranged by Michael Brown. Additionally, the group will perform their set from their Big Nine Music Festival: “His Honor March” by Henry Fillmore, “Dusk” by Steven Bryant and “The Light Eternal” by James Swearingen. All three groups are led by ALHS Director of Bands Suzanne Mauer.
