As part of the Dorothy Godtland Lecture Series, the Board of Directors is pleased to present the program “What Does a School Board Do” with Albert Lea School Board Member Neal Skaar.
The program will run from 7 to 8 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Skaar was a teacher and coach at the Albert Lea High School for over 40 years and retired in 2014.
He was first elected to the school board in 2016. He currently is in his third term on the school board, which ends in 2029.
At the lecture, attendees will learn that to be a school board member, you will need to be voted in by the community, and Skaar will discuss the politics involved.
Skaar will also explain what functions the school board provides to the school district, from developing policies, overseeing budgets to hiring and supervising the superintendent. It also helps set the curriculum, maintains the school buildings and equipment, represents the interests of students, and engages with parents and community members to ensure that the schools are serving the needs of the community.
There will be a Q & A portion at the end of the program.
The Albert Lea School Board’s mission statement: “To ensure individual academic, social and emotional growth that leads to engaged citizens and lifelong learners.”
