Across the nation, scammers are employing various tactics to steal people’s financial information. Recently, they’ve been exploiting rental properties for this purpose.

These criminals find legitimate rental or for-sale property listings online, steal the photos and create fake rental advertisements. They instruct interested parties to contact them directly by phone for more details. As part of a supposed application process, the scammer demands a background check, which includes collecting sensitive financial information. They then use this information to steal from unsuspecting potential renters.

To ensure a rental listing is legitimate, check Freeborn County Beacon (https://beacon.schneidercorp.com) or contact the Albert Lea Fire Department at 507-377-4341 to verify the listing agent’s credentials. Always insist on meeting the landlord or agent in person and verifying their identification before providing any information. Never give financial or personal details over the phone.
