EN(dur)ANCE by Robin Gudal

I was running errands, and when I came out of the local business, the car next to me had their window rolled down.

A timid and pleasant young lady asked if it was my car next to theirs. Yes, it was.

It was a very windy day and she explained the wind had taken the passenger side door, swinging it wide open and nicked mine.

She spoke with trembling fear, and expressed how truly sorry she was. I do not know how long they had waited for me to come outside, but they waited.

After inspection, I assured her I thought it looked OK but took her name and number and said I would have my husband look it over and text her that evening.

I pursued more conversation and thanked her for her honesty. Her willingness to tell me was refreshing and as I observed her mother in the driver’s seat, I felt like this was a big moment in the young woman’s life.

It was possibly a battle of what she knew was right and a nervousness to walk out the consequences, if there were to be any.

I thanked her and told her I was impressed with how ethical she was.

Greggy looked it over, and yes, it had a tiny little mark, but it was nothing impressive. I texted the young lady right away, and within seconds she replied with a big “Thank you!”

We have all had these decisions in life and likely regarding more than a little nick on someone else’s car.

I do not know her life situation, but a claim probably would have been a burden financially for her.

This situation has rallied in my mind for days. I believe even if it had been worth a claim, I may have left it as a reminder for myself to be truthful in all things.

This 22-year-old’s honesty rocked me, challenged me and left me feeling kindness towards her.

I think for some of us this may not have even been a second thought, but it was in her world, so thank you, Maria!
