7 area athletes qualify for state track meet

Student athletes from Albert Lea, NRHEG and United South Central/Alden-Conger competed at the respective section final meets Saturday vying for a spot in the Minnesota state track and field meet. 

The Tigers, competing in Faribault at the Section 1AA meet, qualified two individuals for the state meet. Junior Andrew Tscholl qualified in the 1,600-meter run, finishing second with a time of 4:34.21; and fellow junior Charlie Irvine finished the long jump in second place with an effort of 20’-10.5”, just two inches short of the first-place finisher. 

There were numerous other events Albert Lea came close to qualifying in including sophomore Aiden Boss and junior Isaiah Anderson-Pitchford coming in third and fourth place respectively in the 100-meter dash. The 4×100-meter relay team of Irvine, Anderson-Pitchford, Boss and Tristan Camel also finished third with a time of 43.58, just .11 second away from qualifying and .08 seconds off the school record.

NRHEG and United South Central/Alden-Conger competed at the Section 2A meet at Mankato West High School. 

NRHEG qualified the most student athletes of the area schools with three. Despite not finishing in the top two of their event, both sophomore Annika Ladlie and junior Gabby Schlaak qualified by meeting the standard to qualify in the high jump. Both Ladlie and Schlaak finished with 5’-0” and their best attempts. 

Sophomore Kylie Olson also qualified with a second place finish in the shot put with a throw of 36’-6.5”. 

For United South Central/Alden-Conger, senior Brant Blosser was the only area athlete to win an event outright, taking first place in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.62. Sophomore Jayden Barnick qualified by coming in second place in the high jump with an effort of 6’-2”. 

Blosser, the lone area runner in the Class A meet, will start with prelims at 3:30 p.m. June 10. Ladlie and Schlaak will also compete at roughly 3:30 p.m. June 10 in the high jump. Barnick will start the high jump competition at 3:30 p.m. June 11 and Olson will start the shot put slightly later at 4 p.m.

Both Tscholl and Irvine will start their respective events at the beginning of day two slated to start around 9 a.m. June 11.
